The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Season 1 - Netflix Review

I will admit, I didn't pay this a huge amount of attention at first. How good could a reboot of Sabrina the Teenage Witch be really?

To be honest this has about as much in common with the 90's series as Barney the Dinosaur does with Godzilla...

The 90's series wasn't really a childhood favourite of mine, although I did watch the passing episode because back in the day there was considerably less choice for us kids on TV. It was light and campy, easy going and very much a kids show, the reboot is not.

I did quite enjoy parts of this series, the darker tone is I suppose more my current speed than the original series would be now, but this show really isn't much fun which is what I expected. I would suppose that its closest relation would be Buffy and believe me it doesn't really compare.

There is some surprising gore and swearing to distance itself from being for kids, but it leads me to wonder who the target audience actually is? Anyone who really enjoyed the original series would be put off by the complete departure from it in absolutely every way and anyone else would, in my mind, be more likely to turn it down over more sophisticated offerings such as Stranger Things.

There are some good performances from the older cast (Michelle Gomez especially), and the younger cast aren't at all bad, if a little bland. The plot and script is perfectly fine given then material but nothing about it really blew me away.

I can't quite put my finger on exactly what didn't get me, or I didn't get, about this series but there was definitely something not there, at no point was I ever dying to see the next episode. I wasn't ever really on anyone's side for the duration of the series.

To be fair, this isn't a bad series, its very much OK, but in these days of spectacular TV, I'm just not sure it was good enough. It just felt to me that this was aiming a lot higher than was actually possible. In a way it felt a little like a half measure, not committed to being any one thing but trying to jam to many elements into one series.

Summarise!

It was fine, but don't expect the old series and don't expect a gritty showstopper in its place.
